After a major volcanic eruption on the 5th April 1977 and the appearance of subsequent new fissures and lava flows over the next few days, areas in danger were evacuated. On 13th April at , lava reached the church and burnt down the main door and entered the nave some 2- 3 metres. Pews were set on fire and windows broken by the heat. December 1982, restored and decorated, the church was baptised Notre Dame des Laves. (Our Lady of the Lava). A visit is strongly recommended to this fascinating and diverse French Tropical island.
