Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - The Emscher River has been completely free of wastewater since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river, here at the Schwarzbach muendung, was previously an open, above-ground wastewater canal, combined sewer with surface water and sewage.
