Ion microtrap. Close-up of an ion trap on a microchip. An ion trap uses magnetic and electric fields to trap charged atomic particles, or ions, in a confined space. While in the trap the quantum states of the ions can be manipulated. This ion trap is being developed for use in quantum computing, where the particles are used to store and process information.
