We may take thisopportunity to point out a circumstance which probably hasalready caught the readers attention, that in the Pompeianhouses the walls are very frequently divided into two ormore horizontal bands or compartments of diiferent colours ;and that then the darkest colours are almost always placedlowest, the shades becoming lighter as they approach theceiling.
