It consists of 184 memorial units, each dedicated to an individual victim of the attack. These units are arranged according to the victims' ages, from 3 to 71, creating a timeline effect. Each memorial unit is a cantilevered bench, engraved with the name of a victim. The benches pointing towards the Pentagon represent victims who were inside the building, while those pointing away represent passengers on American Airlines Flight 77. Beneath each bench is a lighted pool of flowing water. The memorial also features an Age Wall that grows one inch per year from 3 inches to 71 inches, corresponding to the ages of the youngest and oldest victims. The landscaping includes paperbark maple trees, providing shade and a natural element to the space. The memorial is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is free to visit. It serves as a place for quiet contemplation, remembrance, and honoring those who lost their lives in this tragic event.
