The Pentagon Memorial, dedicated on September 11, 2008, commemorates the 184 victims who lost their lives in the attack on the Pentagon during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The memorial covers acres and is located just southwest of the Pentagon building in Arlington County, Virginia. It consists of 184 memorial units, each dedicated to an individual victim of the attack. These units are arranged according to the victims' ages, from 3 to 71, creating a timeline effect. Each memorial unit is a cantilevered bench, engraved with the name of a victim. The benches pointing towards the Pentagon represent victims who were inside the building, while those pointing away represent passengers on American Airlines Flight 77. Beneath each bench is a lighted pool of flowing water. The memorial also features an Age Wall that grows one inch per year from 3 inches to 71 inches, corresponding to the ages of the youngest and oldest victims. The landscaping includes paperbark maple trees, providing shade and a natural element to the space. The memorial is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is free to visit. It serves as a place for quiet contemplation, remembrance, and honoring those who lost their lives in this tragic event.
