Black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) in fresh grass, Grumeti Game Reserve, Serengeti,
The rains early in the year in the Serengeti greens the landscape and gives rich grazing to the animals. This triggers the great migration of the herds of wildebeest and zebra from the south towards the north of the country. The Grumeti river floods in the heavy rains and sometimes becomes impassible, and the hippo pools fill up with water. Black-backed jackals are commonly seen hunting and scavanging on the savanna.
