Owing to the necessity for rebuilding cars Nos. 1 and 2 and thelarge amount of routine work necessitated by the increased output offish during the fiscal year, this service has been taxed to its utmostcapacity, and it was found necessary to hire baggage and express carsfrom the railroads on several occasions to assist in making the distri-bution in Virginia and Michigan. XXXV cars was used during the first four mbutlis of the fiscal year in makingcollections of marine and fresh-water fishes and transporting the sameto the Tennessee Centennial Exposition at Nashville, Tenn., and againduring the months of May and June, 1898, in transferring salt-waterspecimens from Woods Hole, Mass., to Omaha, and fresh-water fishesfrom Quincy, 111., and other points in the Mississippi Valley. Car No. 3 also made two trips from Woods Hole to San Franciscowith lobsters, tautogs, and blue crabs, the first in July and the last inDecember. On tfie return trip of the car in July 350 giant crabs werebrought from the Pacific Coast and planted in Pagan Creek, a tributaryof the Chesapeake Bay.
