Ocean Construction Supplies, a ready-mix concrete provider on Granville Island, Vancouver, British Columbia
Ocean Construction Supplies, a ready-mix concrete provider on Granville Island, Vancouver, British Columbia. Ocean Construction Supplies is a leading ready-mix concrete provider in the Metro Vancouver area in British Columbia, Canada. For most visitors finding a cement plant on Granville Island seems slightly strange. But the cement plant has been on Granville Island for nearly 100 years. Until the 1970s, however, the island was an industrial center. During that disco era, a large-scale redevelopment project shifted the island from an industry heart to an urban center of markets, shops, and arts. Throughout that change, Ocean Concrete remained. I've always wondered why. Then I found this old press release: that explains the whole thing. Abbreviated, it's that cement is perishable (within hours) and must be used in that window. Being the only concrete plant within spitting distance of the downtown gives Ocean a huge competitive advantage. It makes financial sense for the company to keep deep roots in Granville Island. The plant has done that by painting their cement trucks to advertise the public market, creating environmental initiatives, and hosting a huge open house each April. I'll be sure to submit an updated review when I head to the plant this coming April for the grand tour. Kenworth is a manufacturer of medium and heavy-duty Class 8 trucks based in Kirkland, Washington, United States, a suburb in Seattle. It is a subsidiary of PACCAR, and is also a former manufacturer of transit buses and school buses.
