Trench of Bayonets First World War memorial, Verdun

The Tranchee des Baionnettes commemorates the men of the 137eme Regiment d'Infanterie who were buried as they struggled though the trench, and found in 1919 when it was noticed that a line of rusting bayonets and rifles was protruding from the ground in an area where men of the regiment are known to have disappeared. 17 unknown soldiers remain buried here, marked by wooden crosses. The other 40 who were identified were reburied elsewhere.
