This species inhabits North America from Manitoba and southern Quebec, south to Texas and central Florida, and winters from Nicarauga to Peru. In New York it is universally distributed as a summer resident and breeds commonly in every county of the State. It arrives from the south from the 3d to the 14th of May, in cold seasons. It is last seen in the fall between the 5th and the 25th of September. A few October records, however, have come to my notice.
