Grey sky view to moored boats and buildings Medlock Tunnel Breather Vent by Rochdale Canal, Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester

This part of the Castlefield Canal Basin is known as the Castlefield Junction. The 1805 Trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal, left foreground, joins the Castlefield Canal Basin, from the north-east. The Bridgewater Canal joins the basin from the south (out of shot right background). The Rochdale Canal links up with the Calder and Hebble Navigation at the Sowerby Bridge Canal Basin, near Halifax. The River Medlock, en route to the River Irwell, flows in a tunnel beneath the wharves, warehouses and canal basin at this location. The circular breather vent for the tunnel stands in the foreground. The Merchants Warehouse, dating to about 1827 and now an office block, rises left of shot. The 40m span Merchants Footbridge spans the canal basin right of shot.
