How manytimes the clove-scented pink has been improved and the varieties thus wrested from Nature again lost, we do not know. We do knowthat during the early part of the present centurythe carnation was a general favorite. Their cul-tivation declined some fifty years ago, and manyof the old varieties were lost. About the sixtiesa new era of advancement was ushered in whichhas continued with increasing force until thepresent time. The span of ten years then seems but a shorttime in the life history of this beautiful species;but it can be truthfully said that the decade be-tween 1888 and 1898 has seen the use and firmestablishment of the .\merican carnation.
