The owners and their families were inside, listening, no donbt, to the old, old story of loving kindness, man's brotherhood, consideration for the weak and lowly, protection to the helpless, etc. Those Christian horse-owners were probably nnctuonsly seconding a prayer for the coming of that kingdom in whioh suffering would be unknown, and the milk of human kindness would ceaseleBsly flow; they were probably contributing liberally to the work of lifting out of the darkness of barbarism and up into the shining light of modern civilization to the beniehted heathen of far-off lan'is. Bat all this time not a few of their horses were enduring a torture more relined and exquisite than any that barbarous heathen could invent. The heads of the poor brutes were held in cruelly unnatural positions, and their necks were heartlessly strained and tortured by that in- famous device of fashion—the overhead check. If the Father is mindful of the sparrow that falls, should not His worship- pers be mindful of the Bufferings of that noblest and beBt of the brute creation, the horse? Tbe gentleman unchecked the tortured horses, and for a moment enjoyed the keenest satisfaction seeing tbe poor ani- mals straighten, stretch and twist their necks to get oords and muscles into tbeir normal positions once more. He fancied, too, that he saw thanks and gratitude in the eyes of the relieved semi-human beasts. He passed on, happier for what he had juBt done.
