American physicist and chemist Glenn T. Seaborg (1912-1999). He discovered the transuranic element plutonium in 1940 and shared the 1951 Nobel Prize for chemistry with Ed McMillan, discoverer of neptunium, for their work on transuranics. During World War II, he developed techniques for the isolation of plutonium for the Manhattan project, America's atom bomb programme. His team at the University of California at Berkeley discovered the transuranics americium and curium in 1944, berkelium and californium in 1949. He became chancellor of the university at Berkeley in 1958, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1961. The photo was taken in his office at Berkeley in 1984.
