Remarks.—The caecid shell consists of three seg-ments, the earliest two of which drop off as the animalgrows. In a small minority of specimens the second(middle) section does not break free; this usually pre-vents the adult segment from reaching maturity. Iden-tification of the separated juvenile and adolescent seg-ments with the adult shells is a difficult and painstak-ing task so the earlier segments are not illust
