Wilbur A. Sawyer (1879-1951), US medical researcher, at the village office of the Yellow Fever Laboratory in Yaba, Nigeria. Sawyer, an expert in tropical diseases, spent much of 1927 in West Africa, supervising and evaluating the Rockefeller Foundation's yellow fever research there. Sawyer was instrumental in developing an early type of vaccine for yellow fever. He was President of the American Society of Tropical Medicine (from 1943) and a member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine. Photographed in February 1927.
