Bassano. The bridge over the Brenta, called Ponte Vecchio or Ponte degli Alpini, is considered one of the most characteristic bridges in Italy.
The bridge over the Brenta, called Ponte Vecchio, Ponte di Bassano or Ponte degli Alpini, located in the city of Bassano del Grappa, is considered one of the most characteristic bridges in Italy, being a covered wooden bridge. It has undergone numerous interventions and reconstructions since its inception, documented in 1209. Since 1928, the bridge has also been dedicated to the memory of the hundreds of thousands of soldiers (in particular the Alpine units) who climbed the Seven Municipalities plateau during the First World War, the scene of bloody fighting for over 41 months. In October 1567 there was a vigorous flood of the Brenta river that swept over the historic pre-existing bridge. The architect Andrea Palladio was involved in the reconstruction from the months immediately following the collapse: in the summer of 1569 Palladio presented the definitive project of a wooden bridge that practically recalled the previous structure, although radically renewed as regards technical and structural solutions, and of great visual impact. Confirming the technological efficiency of the Palladian structure, the bridge lasted for almost two hundred years, collapsing following the overwhelming flood of the Brenta on 19 August 1748. The bridge was rebuilt following faithfully the Palladian design. In the following years the bridge suffered damage and collapses also due to war events, the last in 1945 for a partisan sabotage against the Nazi troops. The bridge was always rebuilt according to the original Palladio design. In June 2019 it was declared a National Monument.
