Sigmund and Anna Freud. Austrian pyschologist Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) and his psychologist daughter Anna (1895-1982) arriving in Paris, France after escaping from Nazis in Vienna in 1938. Freud established the idea that mental impairments could have pyschological as well as physiological causes. He theorised that the human mind contains conscious and unconscious levels; unpleasant memories were repressed and stored unconsciously, whilst still affecting behaviour. Freud studied the unconscious levels by analysing subjects' dreams. Anna was a pioneer of child psychology and stressed the importance of the ego in the development of the subject's personality.
