The clay pan is a dessicated vlei, a clay pan, formed after rains and flooding, creating temporary pools of water. Shifting sands blocked further formation of the ponds, which eventually dried out. Some vegetation coastal desert stretches along the Atlantic coast of South Africa northward to Namibia and Angola. It is regarded by the scientific community as one of the oldest and largest true deserts of the world.
