The Toning of the Bell
The engraving is of a painting by Walter Shirlaw (1838-1909) an American artist who was born in Scotland but immigrated to the USA with his parents at the age of two. He worked first as an engraver but trained as an artist in Germany and became a well known artist of scenes of men at manual work. He also became a teacher of art and was elected an Associate and Academician of the National Academy of Design. The Toning of the Bell is one of his most significant pieces of work and shows a smith at work on a large bell, toning it with the help of a musician striking a note for him.
