Harbour fortress tower. This is Belem Tower, built in the 16th century in Lisbon, Portugal, to defend the harbour. It co-ordinated with two other towers to guard the mouth of the River Tagus, on whose banks Lisbon stands. Construction began in 1514, and it was finished by 1520. It is a symbol of the Age of Discovery when Portuguese navigators were discovering new lands across the oceans.
