In 491 Aegina was one ofthe Slates which gave the symbols of submission ( earth andwater ) to Persia. Athens at once appealed to Sparta topunish this act of medism, and Cleomenes I. {), one of theSpartan kings, crossed over to the island, to arrest those whowere responsible for it.
