House 3 of Pankow District Office situated in historic hospital buildings by Architect Hermann Blankenstein, Fröbelstraße 17, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin

House 3 of Pankow District Office situated in historic hospital buildings by Architect Hermann Blankenstein & completed in 1889. Fröbelstraße 17, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin The complex lies between Fröbelstraße 17 and Prenzlauer Allee 70. In 1934, the medical facilities were moved to Buch and the buildings became an administrative centre. The National Socialist district office then moved into the building complex. After the Second World War, the Soviet occupation forces used part of the building as a secret service base and prison. The prison was located in the basement of what is now House 3. An installation artwork by the artist Karla Sachse is a stark reminder of the Stasi activities– a black band around the building asks questions such as ‘Who disappeared in the cellar? What did they know? Who survived?’ After 1990, Fröbelstraße 17 was the headquarters of the Prenzlauer Berg district office and is now the Pankow District Office
