It has some fine build-ings—churches,and schools. The OrphanAsylum, a fine structure, stands on anelevation to the east of the town. Thereare some very large warehouses, and agreat many vessels are loaded here withgrain for foreign ])orts; it is also thesouthern terminus of the CaliforniaPacific railroad, which connects herewith ferry boats that cross the Straitsto the Vallejo Junction, on the Over-land Route, (see i>age 187). Benicia is celelirated for her excellent schools. Theonly law school in the State is locatedhere, and also ayoung ladiesseminary. Tlie Straits of Carquinez—pronounc-ed kar-kee-nez—are about one and ahalf miles in width, through which the8acraniento and San Joaquin Riversreach San Pablo Bay, five miles front of tlie city a long ferry sliphas been built by the R.
