ANATOMY, TRUNK
Model of the intern anatomy of the chest of an asexual adult human body, face on. The organs of the neck (thyroid gland in light orange), the thorax (lungs and heart) and the abdomen (liver in dark red, gallblader in ochre, stomach in pinkish beige, spleen in plum, large intestine in brown, which is covered by the peritoneum, in orange-yellow, for the left half of the body) are visible. At the thoracic level, the intern structure of the heart (in frontal section) and the lungs is depicted. The bronchial tree (bronchi and bronchioles, in white) and the blood vascularization are shown in the left lung. The right lung, divided in three lobes, is depicted in frontal section; the bronchial tree and the blood vessels appear for that reason in sections. The heart contains four cavities: two atriums in its upper part, and two ventricles in its lower part. The tricuspid (on the right) and mitral (on the left) valves (in white) prevent the blood in the ventricles from flowing back into the atriums. The right and left internal jugular veins (in royal blue) begin at the base of the skull, go down on both sides of the throat to reach the clavicles, where they join up with the subclavian veins (coming from the upper limbs) to form the brachiocephalic trunk. The latter flows into the superior vena cava (in royal blue), which brings the deoxygenated blood coming from the upper part of the body, to the right half of the heart. This dark blood goes through the right atrium and ventricle, then is propeled to the lungs via the pulmonary trunk and arteries (in royal blue). The blood oxygenated by the lungs (arterial blood) is next sent back to the left half of the heart (via the pulmonary veins, in red), which propels it in the whole body through the aorta. The ascending aorta (in red) divides first into the brachiocephalic trunk, then into the common carotid arteries, vascularizing neck and head structures, and lastly into the subclavian arteries, irrigating the upper limbs.
