Part of a17th century blast furnace in the woods at Allensford


Part of the remains of a 17th century iron works in woods at Allensford on the River Derwent and near the border of Northumberland and County Durham. Parts of the charcoal-fired blast furnace have been excavated operational dates are thought to have been roughly between 1683 and 1740. A major 19th & 20th Century steel works was developed at nearby Consett & Shotley Bridge.
