He was a large contractor of both publicand private buildings, and by his industry andgood business acumen accumulated a handsomecompetence. At the time of his death, which oc-curred at his fine residence on East State Street,Rockford, in 1875, he was the owner of a consider-,able fortune. He had large interests in Wisconsin,especially in a large sawmill which he had estab-lished first on his own account, but later owned inpartnership, and was well known for his push andenergy.
