John Bunyan (1628-1688) was an English writer and Puritan preacher dreaming about the pilgrim and the struggle between good and evil as written about in his book The Pilgrim's Progress. The religious tolerance which had allowed Bunyan the freedom to preach became curtailed with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 and he wrote the book while in prison.
