Private Painter of the Signal Corps is shown in this photograph taking a message off the leg of Gunpowder 11, the first bird to carry a message from the front line to headquarters during an attack. The Pigeon Section, under the command of Sgt. Swanker, played a critical role in communication during the war in Cornieville, France on May 2, 1918. This photograph was censored and released by the Censor on June 10, 1918.
