A. Muhlen-berg became its first incumbent. The Lutheran Synod,at its meeting in Pottsville, in 1850, heartily approvedof the arrangement. Fifty years ago the union of the colleges was some-times playfully referred to as the marriage of Sir ^Lir-shall and Lady Franklin; and in after-dinner speechesthere were pleasant allusions to the youthful bridegroomand his somewhat venerable bride. Pursuing the aniiontanalogy, we now beg leave to introduce the knight whocame from afar to woo and wed the lady wiiose story wehave tried to tell. MARSHALL CHAPTER XII. THE HIGH SCHOOL. The charter of Marshall College was granted by theLegislature of Pennsylvania during its session of 1835-1836, receiving the signature of Governor Josepli Ritneron the 31st of March, 1836. In this charter the firstarticle declares: That the High School of Gennan Re-formed Church, located at Mercersburg, be and hereby iserected into a college for the education of youth in thelearned languages, the arts, sciences, and useful litera-ture. It must, therefore, be our first purj)ose to givesome account of the High School which was thus honored,though it may be well to premise that the latter institutionwas itself derived from the Theological Seminary of tlieReformed Church.
