Relation between grog composition and modulus of rupture of bodies burned to cone 14 Size of Grog in Fire-Clay Bodies 3i (c) Quenching Tests from 10000 C.—The results from these testsare given in Table 8 and Fig. 29. The most resistant bodies werefound in series 1 and 2 (4 to 40 mesh grog). In Fig. 29 surfacefactor is plotted against results of quenching tests. The resultsfor 6oo° C agreed fairly well with those for 10000 C. Since this istrue, it might be possible to replace the 10000 test by the moreaccurate 600° test. In general, increase of surface factor caused &*<). 8O-0UST GROG 20-80 GROG Fig. 24.—Series 5. The portionof the curve from iA to iD, etc., indicates that the largest sizegrog was too large for the briquettes used, causing spalling anddestruction of the body. Four standard-size fire brick containingsmall-size grog (through 20 mesh or finer) were heated with thebriquettes in these tests. The brick cracked in two on the averageat the seventh treatment. Two fire brick containing large-sizegrog (about % inch) cracked or spalled in two on the average upon 32 Technologic Papers of the Bureau of Standards the twenty-fifth treatment. Hence, standard-size brick of thecompositions used in this investigation would withstand, onaccount of their dimensions, two or three times the number oftreatments undergone by the briquettes before breaking in two. 4 y£043^~^ 2008 n i^y
