In the alteration ofold buildings for high-school uses, it is possible to provide additional stairwaysand exits and locate them so as to eliminate all danger. The plans presented herewith give the arrangement of each floor of the oldbuilding, parallel with the proposed new one, in such manner as will enablethem to be studied together. It will be noted that the auditorium and gymna-. JCdk\i^ ALTERATION PROBLEM. Ground-fioor plan, old building. sium have been placed at grade along the north and south lot lines, accessiblefor general as well as school uses, and in such a position that the lighting ofthe rooms in the old building will not be impaired. The gymnasium is ofstandard size, and is provided with a spectators gallerj% and locker andshower bath facilities for both boys and girls. The auditorium with a seatingcapacity of 750 is placed symmetrically with the gymnasium. A cross corridorhas been carried entirely through the ground floor from north to south unitingthe group. Behind this the manual training and domestic art departmentshave been placed. In the arrangement of the home economies rooms, the cooking room is placednext to the lunch room. The latter is provided with a general storeroom forsupplies. The laundiy is placed in the old building, near at hand, and thesewing room and liousekeeping suite are arranged over the l
