Fortress of Bowrie in Rajpootana

The area of Rajpootana or Rajputana (Rajasthan) was ruled by Rajput princes each of whom had carved out his own region of dominance and built fortifications on hill tops to exercise control. The region was conquered by the Mughals and later by the British who recruited many Rajputs into their army and permitted some of the princely states to remain semi-independent. The view shows a series of fortifications on hill tops in beautiful countryside with a banian tree whose umbrageous foliage often provides such protection from the elements that it offers a resting place for travellers and occasionally even a permanent home for hermits.
