Ex WD Hunslet locomotive no 75008 'Swiftsure' approacing Cranbrook Road Crossing on the Kent & East Sussex heritage railway

This locomotive was built in 1943 by the Hunslet Engine Company for the Ministry of Defence. It then entered service as WD 75008 at the Longmoor Military Railway, Hampshire. In December 1944 it was sent to France and was hired to the SNCB Antwep Dam. The locomotive was returned to the War Department in February 1946 and brought back to Britain at the end of that year. In 2024 the locomotive was on hire to the Kent & East Sussex Railway, regularly hauling passenger trains along the track from Tenterden to Bodiam. The Kent and East Sussex Railway today is a tourist attraction in the South East of England. It offers an 11 1⁄2 miles ( km)) ride through the Rother Valley in vintage and British Railways coaches usually hauled by a steam locomotive such as ‘Swiftsure’, although some off peak services are operated by diesel multiple unit.
