It was seen that the principle, once established, in relation to the spinal cord, might be carried out still further, and throw light upon many other phenomena hitherto cuffi- ciently perplexing. Dr. Carpenter took up the investigation where it was left by Dr. Marshall Hall, and has given us, particularly in the two last edi- tions of his ' Human Physiology,' a very full and detailed account of the further conclusions at which he has since arrived.
