In late 19th century Dublin, schoolboys and their bearded schoolmaster keep as still as possible for a formal photograph. June 1894 at St Stephen's Parochial School, 2 - 8 Northumberland Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland: the Class of 1894 … staring and scowling schoolboys, with their bearded schoolmaster, keep as still as possible in June 1894 as a local photographer takes a formal photograph against the brick wall backdrop of St. Stephen’s Parochial School at 2-8 Northumberland Road in Ballsbridge, southeast Dublin. The school was founded in 1861, when Ireland was under British rule. It thrived around the time this photograph was taken, with 307 pupils on its register in 1892. Many of them were the children of British soldiers stationed at the nearby Beggars Bush army barracks. In 1916, during the Easter Rising or Easter Rebellion, the school buildings were involved in the Battle of Mount Street Bridge, with many of the desks, used as makeshift barricades, scarred by bullets and shrapnel. After southern Ireland secured independence from Britain in the 1920s, the school continued to thrive. It declined after World War II, and although it was extensively renovated and improved in 1961, its centenary year, there were then only 42 pupils on the register. St. Stephen’s 108-year history ended in 1969 when it finally closed its doors. The former school buildings, begun in 1859, lay empty for 28 years, but in 1997 they were purchased by the Sweeney Hotel Group, which transformed them into today’s Schoolhouse Hotel, with the former classrooms hosting its restaurant and bar. On the original cabinet card scanned to produce this image, the photographer’s name is illegible, although his address, 13 Richmond Cottages, off Summer Hill, Dublin, is visible. A photographer named Augustine Lineham is listed at that address in 1907, but the 1911 Census of Ireland records the name as Augustine Lenehan, then aged 45.
