Black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas). This dog inhabits the open plains of southern and eastern Africa, living in family groups when food is plentiful. Living and feeding socially ensures that there is always at least one individual to scan the horizon for predators. When a potential threat is spotted, an alarm call is given to warn the rest of the pack. The black-backed jackal is primarily a scavenger, living on the remains of kills made by lions and other large predators. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in South Africa and Botswana.
