He was,at the same time, clerk of the Lamp Department doing the entireclerical work of both these important departments of the government. In 1867 he was appointed by his Honor IMayor Otis Norcross asSuperintendent of Lamps, to succeed Capt. William Baruicoat,deceased. The appointment was confirmed by the Board of Alder-men. He was re-appointed and confirmed by each succeeding mayorand Board of Aldermen for sixteen years until 1883. He was againappointed, and served the city in the same capacity two years duringthe administration of his Honor Mayor Thomas Norton GEO, H ALLEN. PHiNEHAS Allens descendants. 21 He was for several years a member of the celebrated Boston CityGuard, which formed the nucleus of the Tliirteenth Regiment Massa-chusetts Volunteers. During the year 1863 and 1804 he was detailed by his HonorMayor Frederick W. Lincoln several times to aid in obtaining re-en-listments to fill the quota of the city in the Union Army. He is a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Companyof jMassachusetts, and has been many years its clerk. He was alieutenant of the company in 1868.
