For the effective occupation ofthe position only a small garrison was needed, and the with-drawal of the division emphasised the fact. The return of General Cameranas division signified theabandonment of any advance by way of Ain Zara, but fora time the faint hope persisted that the rearrangementof the troops might mean offensive operations in anotherdirection. Rumour spoke again, insistently, of the long-expected occupation of Zuara, and the advance on Zanzurseemed to be imminent. There is no doubt that duringthe latter days of
