Blue sky view pedestrians, bicycles, Frierdich List Ufer, north to Invalidenstrasse from Central Railway Station bridge, Berlin

Berlin Central Railway Station is a monumental glass structure, which opened in May 2006, across the River Spree, north of the New German Chancellery Building. It is the biggest station in the European high-speed railway network. Platforms at several levels are served by S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains. The area around the station is being re-developed. Here we see building works at the northern side of the station. Groundwater, on average, is only 2 m below the surface in Berlin, so, when new building work starts, impeding groundwater needs to be drained out off the foundation pit. In the background, blue pipes crossing Friedrich List Ufer, drain groundwater from the building site on the left to Humboldt Hafen, on the right.
