The caption on this 1903 image reads: “Osiris and Isis and Four Children of Horus.” It appeared in the book History of Egypt by French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero. Here, Osiris, the Egyptian god of fertility and of the dead, wears the white crown of Upper Egypt and the menat (amulet weighted to counterbalance heavy collar). He holds in his hands the scepter, crook, and flail—all royal symbols. Standing behind him is his wife Isis, the Mother Goddess. In front of him are the four children of his son Horus.
