Macrophotograph of the head of an adult desert locust, Schitocerca gregaria or peregrina. The mouthparts (bottom centre) are formed by two liplike structures known as the clypeus (superior) and labrum and by two lateral mandibles. Desert locusts are well known for their voracity. They migrate in huge swarms composed of billions of insects, completely destroying every vegetable form along their path. They consume all sorts of plant substances from which their digestive system extract water. Only by eating continuously, may desert locusts survive in very hot and dry climates.
