It is believed that it waserected under Van Curlers administration,and that because of the depredations of thesavages, it was made as a stronghold, withunusually, thick walls, twenty inches at least,and a number of portholes, nine originally,for muskets, pierced through square stonepieces set into the Holland brick of the facing the Hudson river may still beseen, one at either side of the door, and areobjects of curiosity. One is preserved in theUnited States National Museum at Wash-ington, D. C. In alteration and re-buildingduring the earlier part of the nineteenth cen-tury, the others were taken out and were the Indians had accomplished theirmassacre at Wiltwyck, June 17, 1663,
