Late in 1861, almost entii-elythrough the use of the navy, the Federals had control of theAtlantic coast, and in the vicinity of Savannah their shi])s werepatrolling the waters of Ossabaw and \Vassa\v sounds, andtheir gunboats had penetrated up the Edisto River in the direc-tion of the city. But Pulaskis frowning ginis afforded shelterfor any blockade-runners that might succeed in eluding theblockading fleet. It was necessary to reduce this strong fort-ress before a stop
