The first duty,which confronted Captain Orndt upon his taking chargeof Fort Allen, was to care for these Indians and see thatthey safely reached their destination. The conferences of1756 were followed by those of 1757 and 175S until,finally, peace became an established fact. Some accountof these various treaties and talks will be given all this time Fort Allen was visited constantly bythe representatives of the different tribes, on their wayto and fro. 400 The Pennsylvania-German Society,. Colonel Benjamin Franklin. 401 In March, 1758, Captain Orndt had the fort placed inthorough repair. Soon after he was promoted to majorand the entire district placed under his charge. At thistime he was directed to notify the people of the frontiersto assemble in large parties during their harvesting, andprovide each party with sentries for protection. He wasalso directed to see that the friendly Indians wore a broadyellow band around their head or arms to distinguish themfrom the enemy, and, accordingly, requested the Governorto send a supply of the same to Forts Augusta and Allenfor distribution. He was succeeded in the command ofFort Allen by Captain John Bull, immediately after hispromotion. Even as late as June, 1780, the fort was stillin existence, and then occupied by Lieutenant ColonelKern and one hundred and twelve men.
