Boy fitted with cochlear implants. Bilateral cochlear implants being worn by an 8-year-old boy who was born profoundly deaf due to Mondini dysplasia. He was fitted with bilateral (one in each ear) cochlear implants aged 14 months. The external components (microphone and sound processor) are worn on the ears. A lead (not seen) takes the sound to the transmitter part of the device (also not visible), which is magnetically bound to the internal component which has been surgically placed on the skull under the skin. The internal component converts the sound signal into electrical impulses sent to electrodes implanted in the cochlea, the organ of hearing, allowing those with hearing losses to regain a sense of hearing. For side views of the implants, see images C037/4864 and C037/4867. Photographed in 2017.
