Asterophyllites plant fossils. Close-up of the fossilised remains of Asterophyllites equisetiformis plants. This genus of plants were tree-like horsetails that lived in swamps and marshland some 300 to 350 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. The slab of mudstone that they are embedded in measures 100 x 140 mm and is from the Stephanian beds of the Graissessac coal basin, Languedoc, France.
