The most natural course for a road or walk is alongthe banks of a lake or river, yet I have occasionallyobserved great beauty in the separation of these twolines ; as where the water sweeps to the left, and theroad to the right, or vice versa. The true effect of thiscircumstance 1 have often attempted to represent onpaper, but it is one of the many instances in which thereality and the picture excite different sensations. This chapter might have included every necessaryremark relative to fences, whether attached to parks orfarms ; but as I wish to enlarge upon the distinctionbetween the improvements designed for ornament andthose for profit or gain, I shall endeavour to explainthese different objects, as they appear to me oppositein their views and distinct in their characteristics.
