The most natural course for a road or walk is alongthe banks of a lake or river, yet I have occasionallyobserved great beauty in the separation of these twolines ; as where the water sweeps to the left, and theroad to the right, or vice versa. The true effect of thiscircumstance 1 have often attempted to represent onpaper, but it is one of the many instances in which thereality and the picture excite different sensations.
