Illustration of malfunction in the mitral valve through insufficiency or regurgitation. The zoom on the right shows a normal heart. The mitral valve functions correctly and blood cannot leak. In the case of a valvulopathy, the valve does not close completely and blood regurgitates instead of flowing in one direction. The regurgitation reduces the hearts capacity to pump blood to the rest of the body. It is also the cause of counter pressure in the heart and lungs.
