Mitosis, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Longitudinal section through a human T cell in metaphase. During mitosis two daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus. At metaphase, the chromosomes (green) are arranged in a plane at the cell centre. They are held in place by microtubules (brown) attached to the centre (centromere) of each chromosome. Chromosomes are made up of two identical sister chromatids, which are separated into the two daughter nuclei, so that each daughter cell retains the parent cell's genetic information.
